Research is (Partially) Broken

Most researchers wish they had more time for generative research. The problem is that people are trying to do two very different things (generative vs. evaluative) the same way and calling both Research. In this talk, Brad covers the need for a major shift in the way we plan and execute generative research so it can deliver all the value we need it to.

Brad Orego

Head of Research at Webflow

9:30am – 10:00am

Care Less

Giving 100% at your job is a good thing, right? As researchers, the work is never done: drive the bottom line, create novel growth areas while keeping the lights on, and create empathy where there is none. But what if our very focus on doing it all, driving outcomes for everywhere, and that making sure everyone is satisfied is actually harming our impact? In this talk, Zoë Glas talks us through how caring less, not more, can make us better researchers.

Staff UX Researcher at Google

Solar-Powered Research

When research is focused solely on a product, it sort of puts all our eggs in one basket. What if we were able to leverage our research skills to do more than just make a better product, but a better business? In this talk Abby Baylen teaches us how to diversify our research beyond product and closer to the money.

Abby Hoy Baylen

Director, User Research at Later.com

11:15am – 11:45am

Visualizing New Methods

As qualitatively-oriented researchers, we are often talking to users, asking them questions, and getting feedback on new prototypes. However, are these methods limiting our users ability to fully express themselves, and our ability to convey insights to stakeholders? In this talk Vicky will persuade us that its time to add some more co-creative and visual methods to our toolkit.

Lead Strategic Researcher at Salesforce

Build to Learn

AI is changing much about the way we work, unlocking new possibilities about how we design, write software, and run marketing campaigns. How can we use AI to unlock new possibilities in research? In this talk, Molly outlines how she uses generative AI to build new experiences as a researcher to unlock new learnings from her users.

Molly Needelman

Staff UX Researcher at Google

The Five Types of PMs Every Researcher Needs to Know

Research is not done in a vacuum. If you’re going to be successful, you’re going to need to understand ways of influencing your XFN partners. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all approach! In this talk, Zach Schendel outlines the 5 types of partners you need to understand to supercharge your influence.

Zach Schendel

Sr. Director, Head of Research at DoorDash

3:00pm – 3:30pm

Pivot or Perish

Researchers around the world are being asked to do more with less, and when a private equity firm takes over your company that is even more true. How can we adapt our research practice to be seen as indispensable even when budgets are limited? In this talk, Reggie Murphy outlines how his team found a path to success during this challenging transition.

Reggie Murphy

Sr. Director, Head of UX Research at Zendesk

3:30pm – 4:00pm

Real Data Makes for Better Data

When we do research with a designed prototype, it can feel a little… contrived? Are we missing out on too many learnings by not having real user data in these test experiences we’re sharing with our users? Jennifer Maples thinks so, and outlines what we can do about it.

Jennifer Maples

Staff Experience Researcher at Airbnb
